Decapping Project Status
A significant number of the chips sent to “Dr Decapitator” for decapping, de-protecting, imaging and/or dumping are in MAME-friendly hands. This didn’t involve a ninja infiltration operation, stand-over tactics, burglary or social engineering. It was just a matter of getting the word out to people with the right connections and waiting for good things to happen. The person in possession of the chips would like to remain anonymous to avoid certain kinds of unwanted attention, and will be going by the name of “CAPS0ff” for the duration of this project. They are posting updates on a blog if you’re interested in following along.
We owe at least some explanation to the people who donated chips/money for the project, but we unfortunately don’t have a reliable list, so information on what we know will be posted here. The chips were supplied in varying condition, and some are irreparably damaged. Most chips were labelled, but many were not. An inventory has been taken, but not all chips are accounted for – some may be lost.
As a gesture of goodwill, CAPS0ff is prepared to dump chips for preservation, starting with the Intel i8751 microcontrollers. Before anyone gets too excited, these dumps are probably not going to magically fix your favourite non-working game overnight – everything takes time, and results will vary. But any progress is better than no progress, and we now know at least some of the stuff sourced for the decapping project will be preserved.
