Jangokushi Service Mode

What appears below is an English translation of the service menus of Capcom’s Jangokushi: Haoh no Saihai (カプコンの「雀國志覇王の采牌」), running on a Capcom Play System II arcade amusement system. These translations are made available in the hope that they will be useful. I make no representations about accuracy or fitness for any purpose. Test Mode Menu

Test Mode

To start fiddling with settings, hit the test button while the game is in attract mode. You don’t need to reset – it should immediately display the test mode menu shown to the right. In English, it would say:

Test Menu

1) Input Test
2) Output Test
3) Volume Test
4) Colour Test
5) Distortion Test
6) Game Data
7) Settings
8) Memory Test

9) Return to Game

Choose with 1P lever up/down, decide with 1P shot 1

If Settings (設定) is displayed in red, it means that some settings have been changed from the factory defaultson your machine. Yes, it looks like a lot of Japanses characters. But do you know, more than half the menu is imported English words? Learning katakana would let you understand all the imported English that you find in Japanese software.

But anyway, as it says, you move the 1P lever up and down to choose an item, and then press 1P Shot 1 to select it. Selecting Return to Game (ゲームに戻る) will cause the machine to reboot back into game mode.

Input Test Screen

Input Test

To the right you can see the input test, that you get to by selecting Input Test (入力テスト) at the test menu. It’s in English, so you should be able to understand it. The appropriate dark blue zeroes change into bright red ones when you press a button, activate a coin sensor or move the lever. Press 1P Start and Shot 1 simultaneously to return to the test menu.

Output Test Screen

Output Test

To the right you can see the output test, that you get to by selecting Output Test (出力テスト) at the test menu. It’s in English, too, so no translation is necessary. Press the indicated buttons to activate the respective outputs. Press 1P Start and Shot 1 simultaneously to return to the test menu.

Sound Test Screen

Sound Test

To the right you can see the sound test, that you get to by selecting Volume Test (ボリュームテスト) at the test menu. It’s in English, too. It’s funny, you need to be bilingual to use the test mode on this game. Use the lever to select the code for the sound you want to hear. Press 1P Shot 1 to start the sound and 1P Shot 2 to stop it. Press 1P Start and Shot 1 simultaneously to return to the test menu.

Colour Test Pattern

Colour Test

Selecting Colour Test (カラーテスト) from the test menu displays the colour bars shown to the right. This is perfect for setting your monitor brightness, contrast and gamma. Press 1P Start and Shot 1 simultaneously to return to the test menu.

Distortion Test Pattern

Distortion Test

Distortion Test (ひずみテスト) is referring to the displayed image. Selecting it pulls out the dot/hatch pattern shown to the right. This is ideal for adjusting the monitor’s geometry controls. Although the text is obscured, it says you can press 1P Start and Shot 1 (simultaneously) to exit (to the test menu). Yes, that is how you do it.

Game Data Screen

Game Data

To the right you can see the game data display. Get here by selecting Game Data (ゲームデータ) from the test menu. You get very basic bookkeeping data (in English) – number of games from coins, service coins and free play. Pressing 1P Start and Shot 1 to return to the test menu.

Settings Menu

Settings

To set up the various configurable options, select Settings (設定) from the test menu. This will take you to the settings menu shown to the right. It’s a submenu with options for choosing what kind of settings you want to change, and to save your choices, or restore the factory settings. It’s about time there was some more Japanese, isn’t it? In English it would say:

Settings Menu

1) System Settings
2) Game Settings
3) Reset

4) Save and return to test menu

Choose with 1P lever up/down
Select with 1P shot 1

Now before we go any further, a few notes are in order:

  • If Reset (リセット) is in red, it means some settings have been changed from factory defaults on your machine.
  • There is no way to return to the test menu without saving – if you want to back out changes but not do a factory reset, you need to switch off or reset the the machine. There is no “revert” or “don’t save” option.
  • When you move the cursor to item 3, the bottom line changes to 1Pショット1&2でリセット which means Reset with 1P shot 1 and 2. They want to make sure you’re really sure.
  • When you move the cursor to item 4, the bottom line changes to 1Pショット1でテストメニューへ (in red) which means Go to test menu with 1P shot 1.

Choose an item by moving the 1P lever up and down, and select it by pushing 1P Shot 1, unless it’s item 3, which you select by pushing 1P Shot 1 and Shot 2 simultaneously.

System Settings Menu

System Settings

To set up options that don’t specifically relate to the game, select System Settings (システム設定) from the settings menu. The settings screen shown to the right will be displayed (showing the default factory settings). This is one of those cases where they decided that one English word in amongst the Japanese would be a good idea. If it was all English, it would say:

System Settings Coin Setting 1 Coin 1 Credit Continue Allow Monitor Normal Demo Sound On Sound JAMMA Return to settings menu Choose with 1P lever Change with left/right or shot 1/shot 2

The setting is on the left and the current value is on the right. Select a setting by moving the 1P lever up and down. Change the value by moving the 1P lever left and right, or pressing 1P Shot 1 and Shot 2. Changes are not saved immediately – you have to save from the settings menu. If a setting has been changed from the default factory value, the value will be shown in red.

When you move the cursor to Return to settings menu, (設定メニューに戻る) the bottom line will change to 1Pショット1で設定 メニューに戻る (in red), which means Return to settings menu with 1P shot 1. Unsurprisingly, selecting this item takes you back to the settings menu.

Each setting has multiple possible values, so I’ve listed and translated them below:

Game Settings Menu

Game Settings

To set up options that relate directly to the game, select Game Settings (ゲーム設定) from the settings menu. The settings screen shown to the right will be displayed (showing the default factory settings). There isn’t much you can change – just the difficulty and timer speed. In English it would be:

Game Settings Difficulty Easy ••3•• Hard Timer Slow ••3•• Fast Return to settings menu Choose with 1P lever Change with left/right or shot 1/shot 2

Difficulty (難易度) ranges from 1 (the easiest) to 5 (the hardest). Timer also ranges from 1 (the slowest) to 5 (the fastest).

Reset

Choose Reset (リセット) from the settings menu and press 1P Shot 1 and Shot 2 simultaneously to revert to factory default settings. Default settings are loaded immediately. Note that the settings are not written to NVRAM until you save – you can keep the previous settings by resetting or switching off the machine.

Save Confirmation Screen

Save and Return to Test Menu

To save the settings to NVRAM, choose Save and return to test menu (セーブしてテストメニューに戻る) from the settings menu. The machine will briefly display the message shown to the right while it writes the settings to NVRAM, and then you’ll be back at the test menu.

Memory Test Screen

Memory Test

Selecting Memory Test (メモリーテスト) from the test menu will make the game test all the RAM in the system and the program ROMs. If everything’s OK, you will briefly see the screen shown to the right, and then be returned to the test menu automatically. I assume something different happens if the machine is failing, but I’ve never seen this happen.
